Lincoln visits Fort Monroe and is disappointed the CSS Virginia is still dogging his fleet. When she is sunk Lincoln exclaims She had been a thorn in our side for along time and now she is gone.

Fortress Monroe, A Kingdom by the Sea, WHRO

Kingdom by the Sea first aired in 2007.

Since that time, a Programmatic Agreement has been signed among the United States Army, Virginia State Historic Preservation Officer, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Commonwealth of Virginia, Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority (Fort Monroe FADA) and the National Park Service for the closure and dispoal of Fort Monroe, VA

"This is the document that is going to guide what we can and cannot do" with the fort's historic properties, Armbruster said Thursday, April 16, 2009. The Army will end the military mission at the waterfront base in Hampton on September 14, 2011.

The PA drafting process involved extensive public input and dozens of "consulting parties," including Hampton University, the Diocese of Richmond, the Norfolk Historical Society, and Citizens for a Fort Monroe National Park.

National Park Service update:

Members of the Fort Monroe FADA Historic Preservation Advisory Group and the Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority board are working with the National Park Service to explore partnership options for the future.

What Matters airs at 8:30 on Fridays, with a repeat at 10:30, as part of WHRO's Friday night public affairs lineup: In 2011, the U.S. Army will transfer the 570-acre Fort Monroe post in Hampton to the state government. How will the site be developed? Will it become a national park? There are many questions in building the future of the Fort Monroe site. On the program we'll take a look at some of the plans and what some believe should be done with the property. Cathy Lewis hosts "What Matters" Friday, March 13th, on WHRO-TV 15/digital 15.1.

February 19, 2009 - Watermen are 'catching pots' instead of harvesting crabs

Pete Freeman of Hampton is one of 58 Virginia watermen participating in a work program stemming from a federal declaration that the Chesapeake Bay's crab fishery is a national disaster. Congress approved $10 million to aid watermen after state regulators shut down the winter crabbing season. Now, instead of harvesting crabs, Freeman is working for the government, scouring the lower Bay for abandoned crab pots and other marine trash.
