Governor: plan preserves historic fortBy the Associated PressAugust 19, 2008 RICHMOND, Va. - Governor Tim Kaine is endorsing a plan for the future of Fort Monroe, saying it ensures the preservation of the historic Hampton property for generations to come. The governor on Tuesday backed a plan developed by the Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority, which is assessing the base's future once the military departs in 2011. The authority will now submit the plan by Sept. 30 to the Department of Defense. Fort Monroe was first established as an Army installation in 1819. The property totals 570 waterfront acres. Kaine and his Cabinet will tour Fort Monroe on Wednesday. |
