Parks Service supports limited National Park at MonroeSeptember 23, 2010 | Daily Press By David Macaulay, dmacaulay@dailypress.com HAMPTON — A team from the National Park Service has concluded Fort Monroe is likely to meet the criteria for a unit to be set up at the post. But the primary area of interest is the area surrounding the moat and the historic fortress rather than the natural parts of Fort Monroe, according to a letter to U.S. Sen. Jim Webb from Dennis R. Reidenbach, regional director of the northeast region of the National Park Service. "The current NPS team concludes that criteria for the establishment of units of the National Park system could likely be met at Fort Monroe," the letter states. The report was discussed at a high level meeting in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday involving officials from the Army, the Park Service, the Hampton Roads congressional delegation, the Fort Monroe Authority and the city of Hampton. ![]() |
