SEE RESIDENTIAL HOUSING AVAILABLE NOW Press Room |
FMA offers three options to post residentsBy Stephanie Slater - CASEMATE STAFF WRITER The Fort Monroe Authority recently announced that current and incoming residents of Fort Monroe whose tours of duty here continue past the Base Realignment and Closure date of September 15, 2011 have three housing options. The U.S. Army will transfer all residential units to FMA by September 1, 2011, and in an effort to offer service members the most flexibility, the three housing options are now available. Option 1Service members may continue to live on or move onto Fort Monroe. Prior to Sept. 1, they can sign a lease agreement with the FMA's property management company for the remainder of the service member's current tour of duty. This arrangement will be just like living "on the economy," except service members will be charged their Basic Allowance for Housing for rent and utilities. However, phone and cable services are not included. Option 2Current or incoming residents can sign up for Joint Base Langley-Eustis housing for either the Army or Air Force base; or other local base housing, such as Naval Station Norfolk or Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, and move when quarters become available. If no availability is expected by Aug. 1, then Option 3 will apply until housing becomes available. Option 3Service members can move off post onto the local economy. Current Fort Monroe residents are asked to submit move requests to the housing office no later than Aug. 1 to ensure a timely move. Paid local moves for current residents will be authorized beginning March 1. Specific details regarding these housing options will be covered at an upcoming FMA Town Hall Tuesday, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Post Theater. Also, the housing options will be discussed during a garrison-hosted televised town hall Thursday which will be aired at 6 p.m. on Hampton Community Channel 47. The broadcast also can be viewed online at http://www.hampton.gov/channel47.
