National Park Service due at Va fortUSA TodayHAMPTON, VA. — A National Park Service team is paying a visit to Fort Monroe to assess any future role for the agency in the Hampton landmark's rebirth. The team is due at the Chesapeake Bay fortress on Monday for a several day tour. The state is scheduled to take over the historic military outpost from the Army in September 2011. Fort Monroe planners envision a tourism destination with museums and other attractions focusing on the post's military history, in addition to private investment to attract visitors. A Park Service official who will lead the Fort Monroe visit describes it as a follow-up to a review conducted several years ago. |
