Living history at MonroeWhich building space would work best to house museums at Fort Monroe? It's not clear yet which museums might locate at the historic post, but the Historic Preservation Advisory Group is looking into it. Charles Cureton, the chief of museums and historic property at Fort Monroe, suggested "Building 5," a large property inside the moated area, as workable museum space because it has open areas that might work well as galleries. Building 5 has more than 80,000 square feet of space. During a briefing on Monday, Cureton recommended against storing artifacts on the first floor because of the potential of flood from a big storm or hurricane. Instead, the first floor would serve better for living history, classrooms and shops, Cureton said. The development authority will decide the use of each building.
