BATAVIA - A ceremony took place at 10 a.m. Tuesday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Ringing bells to mark the occasion at the Holland Land Office Museum are, from left, Civil War reenactor Elijah Monroe, Jeff Donahue, Shannon Guiste, Terry Lee and Anne Marie Starowitz. The bells also rang at the old Genesee County Courthouse, a short distance away. The Civil War began April 12, 1861, when Confederate soldiers attacked Union troops at Fort Sumter, S.C. The war officially ended May 26, 1865. A committee has been formed to plan events in Genesee County over the next four years. |
