Vote slated on National Park at Fort Monroe

HAMPTON – The board of the Fort Monroe Authority is scheduled to vote on the size of the footprint of a potential National Park for the historic site today.

Fort Monroe

While the National Park Service appears to favor a more limited area delineated by the road system around the fort and the moat, including the fortress, some local decision makers and Citizens for a Fort Monroe National Park are in favor of a more extensive park, covering the 565 acre site.

But the final decision doesn't rest with the National Park Service. A national park can be designated by either Congressional authorization or a presidential declaration.

The meeting starts at 1 p.m. at the Bay Breeze Center on Fort Monroe.
