Transfer of Phase One Family HousingFort Monroe Authority begins first steps in the execution of the Reuse Plan with the early transfer of historic properties in the Fort Monroe National Historic Landmark District Fort Monroe, Old Point Comfort, Hampton, VA, February 1, 2011….Today, a quiet action but one of great significance occurred when the Fort Monroe Authority leased 27 units of historic family housing units from the U.S. Army in the Fort Monroe National Historic Landmark District. These Colonial Revival duplexes were built between 1906 and 1911 to accommodate officers coming to the Coastal Artillery School. Designed from Quartermasters General’s plans they are located near the Historic Chamberlin, with views of the marina and water. The family housing of one and two bedroom units will be available to military personnel for move in on or near February 7, 2011. Divaris Real Estate, Inc. and Frye Properties, Inc. provide leasing, management and advisory services to the Authority in a joint venture called Old Point Comfort Real Estate Services, LLC. (OPCRES). OPCRES has a preferential leasing program designed to encourage military families to remain in their homes after the post transfers to Commonwealth ownership. OPCRES currently manages the 118-unit Monroe Apartments for the Authority. The complex has a limited number of apartments available. There are a total of 292 units of historic housing at Fort Monroe, and this action places about half of them under Fort Monroe Authority’s management. The balance of the Fort Monroe Army family historic housing inventory is expected to transfer to the Authority on August 1, 2011. It is anticipated that the majority of the remaining units will be leased by the military residents currently residing in them now. “We are excited about taking over these outstanding residential units in advance of the post transfer. It expresses the high level of cooperation we enjoy with the U.S. Army towards the shared goal of a smooth transition.” states, Bill Armbruster. The Fort Monroe Authority is the political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia who will manage the property for the Commonwealth once the U.S. Army transfers the site to the state on September 15, 2011. |
