The Chamberlin, Award of Excellence, named Best Renovated/Historic Rehabilitation Project

HAMPTON ROADS - The Chamberlin received the Award of Excellence and was named the Best Renovated/Historic Rehabilitation Project for 2008 by HRACRE, Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate. This was the 12th annual HRACRE Excellence in Development Design Awards gala, which included 13 categories with 56 submissions from businesses throughout the area.

The Chamberlin was originally a nine-story hotel built in 1928, located on Fort Monroe. While being transformed into the resort like senior independent living facility it is today, many challenges had to be overcome such as replacing the sprinkler, plumbing and electrical systems while also maintaining the historic integrity of the building. Original Palladian windows were preserved and thousands of tiles were reproduced to match those original to the pool.

Judges' comments included, "Beautifully enriched historic renovation. The penthouse renovation was especially powerful. Sensitive renovation and adaptive reuse. Concept to change from hotel to a senior independent living facility should be applauded. Renovation has extended the life of an important historic building."
