Bike Ride at Fort Monroe
Fort Monroe/Buckroe Beach, 15 miles
Begin your ride at one of the parking areas in downtown Phoebus, head down East Mellen Street, and cross the bridge that connects to Fort Monroe. You'll need a photo ID and proper head gear before the sentry will admit you to the base. Bear right onto McNair Drive and then left in front of the historic Chamberlin Hotel. You'll pass Continental Park and the gazebo where the TRADOC Band performs during the summer months. Pick up Fenwick Road for a pleasant shoreline ride along the Chesapeake Bay. After a short ways, take a left detour across the moat into the fort where the Casemate Museum is located. After a spin around the interior of the old fort, exit and continue up Fenwick. You'll pass abandoned defense batteries and the Officers' Club before the road dead-ends at the end of the base. Double back and bear right onto Stillwell Drive to return to the base entrance. From there turn right onto Willard Avenue and connect with Yukon and East Virginia avenues to take you to North Mallory Street. Turn right and ride several miles to Buckroe Beach. Connect with First Street for another shoreline ride out to the Salt Ponds Marina. Rest up for the long ride back to your starting point.
