NATIONAL DESIGNATIONS FOR FORT MONROE

For more than 400 years, Old Point Comfort and Fort Monroe have served at the forefront of our nation’s history. From the 17th-century explorations of Captain John Smith through the Civil War and into the 21st century, this special place maintains a prominent part of our country’s story. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, Fort Monroe has received several national designations to celebrate and protect this area’s important heritage.

PRESERVING A LANDMARK

Today, Fort Monroe is a park “in progress,” with facilities, services, and programs being added over the coming years. As part of the master land planning process, many of Fort Monroe’s numerous historic buildings will be preserved and adaptively re-used.
