Poetry

It’s said that the inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” came from his time at Fort Monroe. Poe was stationed at Fort Monroe during his tenure in the military. He returned later in life to seek respite at the Hotel Hygeia, a tourist destination from 1822 to 1862.
